John Cairney was best known for playing Robert Burns.
The Glasgow-born actor was best known for playing Robert Burns on stage, as well as many roles across film and television productions. The actor was born in 1930 in the city's Baillieston area and briefly attended art college but dropped out to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
"John was a member of our very first acting programme and was literally first in the classroom door when it opened in 1950. After drama school, where he met his first wife Sheila, John began a successful career in the theatre. His most famous film role was in Jason and The Argonauts – where his infamous character was crushed to death by the bronze statue, Talos.
