As youth crime in the state ramps up considerably, the Allan government has declared new reforms in a bid to reduce serious offences committed by young people.
Repeat youth offenders will be subjected to ankle bracelet monitoring under Labor’s new trial to ensure bail conditions, such as curfews, are not being breached.
Up to 50 youth offenders will be trialled, with courts permitted to order children as young as 14 who have been charged with serious offences to be subject to electronic monitoring.A spike in youth crime in Victoria has prompted the state government into action. The monitoring will also allow police to intervene early and ideally set young people on the right path by preventing them from breaching curfew and going out at night.
Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt threw his support behind the initiative, labelling the trial “sensible and pragmatic”. “Any measure that prevents a person from becoming a victim of crime to a recidivist offender, is one that The Police Association supports and one that the community will take comfort from."“When everything else has failed, this is a way of protecting recidivist offenders from themselves. It is a positive alternative to jail,” he said.Victorian Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes hopes the monitoring will help get young criminals back on track.
