Victorian households have the highest gas usage in the country, but now the state government is urging people to make the big switch.
Victorian households have the highest gas usage in the country, with almost 90 per cent using gas appliances.
Their gas cook top, ducted heating and hot-water system were all ripped out and replaced with electric appliances, in an effort to create a more sustainable household – and drastically slash their bills."Once we were ready to do everything we just rang the gas company and got our meter abolished," Sarah Anderson said.
Sustainability Victoria's December 'State of Sustainability Report 2023' surveyed thousands of Victorians, including their attitudes towards disconnecting from gas. "Research recently undertaken in Australia has begun to identify the reasons behind this hesitancy to move completely away from gas," the report noted.
A flagship policy introduced to help this is the banning of gas connections in new homes from the start of 2024, along with an expansion of the Victorian Electric Upgrades program providing rebates for households to replace gas appliances with electric. Shadow Energy Minister David Davis said the state had not done enough to support gas production, and was being too authoritarian in its efforts to electrify the state.
