Zac Newman, 27, deliberately drove a van into a gang of men in Ilkeston
This CCTV shows the build up to a murder. In it, crowds of people are in Ilkeston Market Place in the early hours of December 16, 2023, when a fight breaks out. Following it, one of those involved, 27-year-old Zac Newman, gets into his van and drives into the square where he deliberately drives at the group, killing Derby County fan and promising footballer Sam Wilson, of Long Eaton , and injuring two more people.
Following a two-week trial, at Derby Crown Court, a jury took 20 hours of deliberation to find the defendant, of The Crescent, Stapleford, Nottingham, guilty of the murder of Mr Wilson and two other charges in relation to the other men he struck with his van. They reached majority verdicts on all of the charges. He will be sentenced at the same court on the afternoon of Friday, July 5.
Judge Shaun Smith KC said: "It is a life sentence but it is a case of the tariff .” After the verdicts were delivered, Newman admitted the killing put him in breach of a suspended sentence, imposed at Nottingham Crown.Mr Wilson was a member of Curzon Football Club and always a Derby County season ticket holder. His family weapt openly when the CCTV was shown to the court during opening remarks by prosecutor John Lloyd Jones KC.
