A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper shot and killed a man armed with a hammer who was involved in a “road rage incident,' authorities said.

Photos from a Washington State Department of Transportation camera show what appears to be a man attacking a construction worker on northbound I-5 in Everett on Thursday, May 16, 2024. who was involved in a “ road rage incident," according to authorities.

SMART spokesperson Courtney O'Keefe said the man had rammed a Washington State Department of Transportation contractor vehicle and a lift that was on the shoulder of the highway. The lift had two WSDOT contractors onboard and was operating over the slough. The video shows the man chasing a WSDOT contractor around the car, while another contractor can be seen in the lift. The contractor being chased then jumps over the barrier, but the man is able to grab them and starts attacking them from the other side of the barricade. After the man stopped assaulting the contractor, he can be seen in the video walking back to his car and getting in.

It’s currently unclear if the man was attempting to steal the vehicle, but he was only in the driver's seat for a few seconds before getting out and running across the interstate during rush hour.
