I’ve never been able to muster much enthusiasm for this detective series - until this very last series
books. Set in a sumptuously recreated early 1900s Austria, the crime drama might have been a hit for BBC Two when it debuted in 2019 but I’ve never been able to muster much enthusiasm.
Set in 1909, it involved a mysterious figure known as Mephisto, a traitor at the heart of the establishment who was passing on secrets that threatened the Austro-Hungarian Empire as it grappled with the Serbian nationalism that would lead, five years later, to the First World War. The episode began with the murder of the Director of Security after being persuaded to meet a notorious criminal who claimed to know the identity of this Mephisto. Oskar was blamed for the lapse in security and, taken off the case, he decided to go freelance with the help of Max – now a famous Freudian analyst recently returned from a lucrative lecture tour of America.The Freudian angle of the series has always been rather cursory, and that was the case here.
This clue led the pair to Vienna’s grandest casino, where they decided to impersonate aristocratic gamblers – Max’s impulsive sister, Leah , tagging along too – bringing Max’s on-off girlfriend Clara with her.
