A new Barbie film from Warner Bros has been banned in Vietnam over a scene in the upcoming movie showing China's contested claims to territory in the South China Sea.

Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was originally slated for release in Vietnam on July 21, but will no longer be shown in Vietnam, the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reports. Appearing in the film is a Chinese map showing a red nine-dash line, or what is otherwise referred to as a "cow's tongue".The red lines depicts China's claims over large parts of the South China Sea, including areas Vietnam considers its continental shelf.

"We do not grant a licence for the American movie Barbie to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line," the paper quoted the government's Department of Cinema head, Vi Kien Thanh, as saying.Other blockbuster films have been banned in Vietnam for the same reason.

Last year, Sony's Uncharted, starring Tom Holland, was also banned for showing a map with the nine-dash line.to receive our daily newsletters and breaking news alerts, sent straight to your inbox.
