Hundreds gathered in Liverpool city centre to pay tribute to international drag star The Vivienne, whose real name was James Lee Williams.
A city centre vigil was held tonight (Sunday, January 12) in memory of international drag icon The Vivienne. Hundreds gathered at St George's Plateau to pay tribute to the star, whose name away from the stage is James Lee Williams. The Vivienne's death was confirmed by her publicist, Simon Jones, last weekend.
In a touching Instagram post, Simon paid tribute to the star who kicked off their career on the city’s Stanley Street in the Pride Quarter, explaining how they weren't just a client but a cherished friend. Simon said: 'James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.' A vigil was held tonight from 6pm with fans and people close to The Vivienne in attendance. The vigil was organised by local charity Sahir House, whom The Vivienne worked closely with in the past. Friends shared heartfelt letters, tributes and anecdotes of The Vivienne including music that was personal to their relationship. Balloons were released into the air while 'For Good' from the Broadway musical Wicked played through speakers throughout the plateau. Green balloons were released in reference to the musical and also The Vivienne's past role as The Wicked Witch. The drag superstar handled the famous act during a touring production of Wizard of Oz last year. People left floral tributes on the steps of St George's Plateau with buildings across the city lighting up green in memory. James was described as an 'inspiration' whose work was a 'celebration of life' in one of many heartfelt messages shared throughout the vigil
