The suit alleges the Corps issued a permit for the Manh Choh Mine “without meaningfully consulting with the Tribe or conducting the environmental reviews necessary to adequately analyze the impacts of the mine.”
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has become the target of a lawsuit brought by the Native Village of Dot Lake.
According to a press release from the village on July 8, the suit alleges the Corps issued a permit for the Manh Choh Mine “without meaningfully consulting with the Tribe or conducting the environmental reviews necessary to adequately analyze the impacts of the mine.” The release cites risks that such an open mine might pose to the environment and toward subsistence communities in the area.
It also expresses worries about increased domestic and sexual violence as a result of man camps near the community. Village President Tracy Charles-Smith was quoted as saying, “We are not against mining. What we want is for consideration to be given to the air, water and land we all share. It is a fact that crime, particularly sexual assault and human trafficking, dramatically increases with the development of these types of man camps. The ore being hauled from the mine is toxic.
