Sandy Sarwar, who runs the Blairgowrie outlet, said the 'non-routine' search jeopardises his job
A local business owner has hit out at what he has described as a “heavy-handed” and “non-routine” inspection of his premises by Trading Standards and Police Scotland.
“I called Trading Standards the following day and they then called me back and said that the vapes would be returned to me on the Monday as they had tested the nicotine levels of the various vapes and found that they were legal. “Only four establishments were targeted by Trading Standards in Blairgowrie that day; and all of them were small independent shops owned by people from ethnic minorities. The same vapes are sold in supermarkets in the town and they were not visited.
“I feel that this should be investigated as all shops selling tobacco and vapes in Blairgowrie should have been inspected that day. “Officers are often accompanied by a tobacco dog during such visits, and it is normal practice to restrict access to the premises while the dog is searching on the basis that it allows the dog to focus on the task, as well as ensuring a safe environment.
“However, intelligence has shown that most sales of illicit products are through small and medium-sized independent retailers.”
