Rydal is a small village in Cumbria in the Lake District, located between Ambleside and Grasmere. You can visit the beauty spot during a walk of the nearby lake – Rydal Water, which was a favourite with William Wordsworth. The main hall has 30 bedrooms and boasts its own chapel, dining room and oak-panelled library. Hidden in the grounds is a little brick hut, known as the Grot, or grotto, built in 1668 by Sir Daniel Fleming. It's only accessible via a winding, uneven gravel path parallel to the river.
Sturdy and waterproof footwear is advised, especially in wet conditions, and be aware the path is narrow and could become muddy and slippy due to fallen leaves. Entrance to the estate grounds, which are open throughout the year, is free, with an optional donation towards their upkeep.
