Maverick Vinales expressed his belief that Aprilia made a mistake by significantly changing its MotoGP bike for the 2024 season. He preferred to build upon the successful 2023 model.
Maverick Vinales has revealed he requested Aprilia to implement only minor updates to its MotoGP bike in 2024 instead of a major redesign. The Italian manufacturer introduced a significantly revised RS-GP at the beginning of the year, emphasizing aerodynamics in an attempt to bridge the gap to Ducati and KTM. This strategy initially showed promise with Vinales' victory in the sprint race at Portimao and a double win in Austin.
However, Aprilia gradually lost competitiveness as the season progressed, with Aleix Espargaro's victory in the Barcelona race being the only other win for the team. Vinales believes Aprilia could have benefited from building upon its successful 2023-spec bike, which secured two victories with Espargaro, rather than taking a completely different direction this year. 'When I finished 2023 in Valencia, I asked just two things: start and the same bike,' Vinales stated. 'Because I loved that bike.' 'I think with the 2023 bike, a little bit more aero, a little bit more downforce, it was the bike - I don't know whether to fight with Ducati - but to be top four, for sure. Because of consistency. We knew the set-up, we knew everything.' Vinales questioned if Aprilia went too far with the changes to its 2024 bike, stating that 'when we discovered it was too late. We could not change.' He added: 'I needed to ride all year with a bike that I didn't like.' Aprilia was the only manufacturer to defeat Ducati in a Grand Prix this year thanks to Vinales' success at the US Grand Prix. Both he and his teammate Espargaro were also the only non-Ducati riders to win a sprint race in 2024
