He wants to allow the next generation to take over
Sir Vince Cable has announced he will stand down as leader of the Liberal Democrats in May.
The 75-year-old had previously said he would resign after Brexit had been ‘resolved or stopped’ – but said it was now clear that ‘may never happen’. In an interview with the Daily Mail, the Lib Dem admitted he had presided over a ‘gradual’ rather than a ‘spectacular’ recovery of the party since taking over in 2017.Sir Vince told the newspaper he will remain as an MP but wanted to step aside to allow ‘the next generation’ to take over.
He said: ‘I wanted to set it out so that there’s an orderly process of succession and the next generation can come through – rather than chaotic power struggles you’re seeing inside the Tory party and Labour party, so I wanted us to do better than that’.The veteran Twickenham MP was a business secretary in the coalition government from 2010 to 2015.
He said he hoped to spend more of his free time with his family and writing books, adding: ‘My wife Rachel has been very supportive and doesn’t mind me doing it and has come round the country with me, but she would like to spend more time with me.If you have a story for our news team, email us at
