What started out as an elaborate joke, became a reality for just one night
A group of friends living in New York City managed to pull off one of the most elaborate jokes in the city’s restaurant scene. The “fake steakhouse” has gone viral after opening up its doors and racking up a waiting list that’s over eighteen months long.
Diners were presented with a four-course set menu, priced at $114 and served by 60 members of “staff” . The New York Times wrote: “The menu purported to follow the life cycle of a cow. As diners at the pop-up’s 35 tables tucked into courses like Meadows Bring Life , Youth: Ever Precious, Ever Fleeting and Agrarian Synergies , some diners became suspicious.”
Becky explained that what started out as a joke then became a reality as the friends set up a website and made the restaurant real “for one night”. She continued: “Over 900 actual New Yorkers put their names on the waitlist and last week, 140 of them got a call a table was available. Most of these people have been waiting over a year.
Becky continued: “Naturally, some of these paying customers felt annoyed that they’d spent money and a Saturday night on the prank, but for the most part, people went in with zero expectations, so they were happy that they got to at least experience something sort of funny and weird. If you’d waited on a waitlist for a year and a half to get into a restaurant and it was this, how would you feel?”
AB simply commented, “This a rip off of The Shed at Dulwich??,” while czasem_Stefan wrote, “This what Oobah Butler did in 2017 in London — NYT is a joke when they try to sell this story as original w/o this background.” Vicky said: “The Shed at Dulwich but make it 2023.”
