Tuesday marked the 17th anniversary of the tragic Virginia Tech shooting that claimed the lives of 32 people.
Virginia Tech honored and remembered the lives that were lost in the tragic shooting on campus 17 years ago, taken on April 16th, 2024.
Students, staff, and members of the community all gathered to remember the 32 people shot and killed during a wreath-laying ceremony just before 10 am.For the University's ROTC Air Force cadets, today is personal because they lost one of their own in this tragedy: Matthew Joseph La Porte. “The airmen’s medal is the highest medal awarded for bravery, not under armed conflict with an enemy," Colonel Lowe said. "So very high honor for Cadet La Porte.”
“The important part is to understand who Matthew was, what he did that day, and for us all to live up in his honor to the courage that he displayed," Colonel Lowe said.
