Yevgeny Prigozhin released a video of himself, apparently somewhere in Africa, shortly before his private jet crashed Vladimir Putin has ordered Wagner Group soldiers to sign an oath of allegiance to Russia following the plane crash believed to have killed theirIt comes after the Kremlin described claims in the West that Prigozhin had been killed on its orders as an “absolute lie”.
The decree, published on the Kremlin website, obliges anyone carrying out work on behalf of the military or supporting what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine to swear a formal oath of allegiance to Russia. “I told him: ‘Yevgeny, do you understand that you will doom your people and will perish yourself?’ He had just come back from the front. On an impulse he said: ‘I will die then, damn it!”
Russian authorities said the private jet was carrying the Wagner chief and some of his top lieutenants and everyone on board was killed when it went down. There is heavy speculation, but no evidence, that Mr Prigozhin was killed as an act of vengeance for mounting a short-lived rebellion in June that challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin’s authority.
Mr Prigozhin was a key ally of the Russian president but their relationship soured after the Wagner boss staged the aborted uprising against Moscow’s military leadership over dissatisfaction with the treatment of his fighters in Ukraine.
