The memorial service for Shehane will be held on July 10 at 10 a.m. at the RSA Alabama Activity Center at 201 Dexter Avenue in Montgomery.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Victims of Crime and Leniency , alongside the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission, is set to hold a memorial service a week from Wednesday for their late founder Miriam Shehane., will be honored during the tribute for her “tremendous impact on victims’ rights and services in Alabama, personal dedication to countless survivors and her four decades of service” to both VOCAL and the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission.

“She was a force, a mother who had experienced more than many could bear, yet she harnessed that tragedy into a positive light that would forever shine in Alabama,” VOCAL Executive Director Wanda Miller said in a statement following the passing of Shehane, who founded VOCAL in 1982 after dedicating herself to establishing crime victims’ rights in the state after the murder of her own daughter Quenette in 1976.

Parking access at the Activity Center deck across the street from the venue will be available on the day of the event at no charge. Refreshments will be available as well after the service. In lieu of flowers, Shehane’s family has requested that donations be made in Miriam’s memory to VOCAL, Clio Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
