The consequences of Saturday’s result will go far beyond shattering the hopes of Indigenous leaders.

Not since Robert Menzies failed to ban the Communist Party, or Billy Hughes tried to introduce conscription, has a prime minister been so heavily invested in a referendum proposal.

On Saturday, every state and territory – bar the ACT – voted a resounding No. The same happened in the republic referendum in 1999, but the margins this time were greater. In South Australia, with the ultra-popular Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas, who has established his own Voice, the rejection was profound with 64 per cent voting No.

There are myriad reasons why the proposal for an Indigenous Voice to parliament and Constitutional recognition suffered such a crushing defeat but Albanese, when asked, singled out just one – the lack of bipartisan support. The Yes votes easily led the No vote in North Sydney, Warringah, Mackellar, Goldstein, Kooyong, Wentworth and Curtin. While of some significance, these observations were outweighed by the overwhelming No vote in dozens of Labor seats.. On Saturday, 60 per cent of the nation backed Dutton on the Voice.Albanese did what he had to on Saturday night.
