Lines to vote in Melbourne’s inner west suburb of Yarraville were non-existent at lunchtime despite having been lengthy throughout the entire federal election day last May. Yes campaigners outnumbered voters and said they had encountered only a handful of No voters at the Yarraville Trugo Club. At the nearby Yarraville West Primary School, sausage sizzle volunteers said they had seen a steady stream of voters, but no long queues.
Perhaps deterred by their recent state and federal election voting experiences, many chose to visit early polling stations. The nearby Maribyrnong centre was buzzing on Friday, when 1 million Australians cast their votes early. Across town at Northcote Primary School in Melbourne’s inner north crowds spilled out onto the street waiting to vote, while Preston was not busy at all.
