People who are socially engaged when middle aged and beyond are between 30 and 50 per cent less likely to develop dementia later on, a review of evidence led by UCL researchers has found. They looked at studies from the UK and around the world which concluded that lifelong social participation could alleviate dementia risk through brain maintenance by reducing stress and improving blood flow to the brain, known as cerebrovascular health.
