Votes for six-year-olds - too radical for you? How about 16-year-olds then?
is a new initiative by The Irish Times, providing a sustained focus on child welfare and children’s issues over the coming year. Inspired by the Democratic Programme issued by the first Dáil a century ago, we explore the problems facing children in Ireland today and offer solutions that would make this a better country to be a child.
Sixteen-year-olds have the right to leave school, drive a car and enter full-time employment, so why not include the right to vote? The National Youth Council of Ireland, which has led the campaign to lower the voting age, says such a move would catch up with fact that 16 is an age where teenagers currently gain important legal rights and responsibilities.
