State Board of Education chairman Aaron Kinsey confirmed that a vote on the American Indian/Native Studies course will not be on April’s agenda.

Proponents of the course held the news conference to urge Kinsey to put the standards up to a first vote during the upcoming board meeting, which runs April 9-12. Kinsey said even without the vote, the class could still be available for any public school to offer next year as an “innovative course.” “Simply put, students want to take Ethnic Studies,” the Ethnic Studies for Texas Schools Coalition wrote in a recent letter to board members.Board members’ decisions around ethnic studies come amid a highly politicized climate about the way public schools teach painful aspects of the nation’s history.

Conservative pundits increasingly have conflated critical race theory with diversity and inclusion efforts, anti-racism training and multicultural lessons.
