As the state heads to the polls for the 2024 Queensland election, around 30 per cent of booths won't be fully accessible.
As the state heads to the polls for the 2024 Queensland election, about a third of booths won't be fully accessible. Queensland ers with a disability have fallen out of their wheelchairs and been left feeling humiliated trying to exercise the "human right" of casting their votes because booths are inaccessible, according to advocates.
Marayke Jonkers says she would've missed out on voting if she hadn't checked her nearest polling booth ahead of time. "Especially in the more regional and remote areas, they are more likely to be less accessible," they said. They said accessibility had improved but "we still need to recognise that the ability to vote is an equitable human right."There are 5.5 million Australians with a disability so "you have people with disability at every single location, and you can't get to an accessible place, then that's not sufficient", Mx Spindler-Smith said.
"We do assessments of every aspect of every venue and outline each item of these details on the website so people can make an informed decision about where to cast their vote." She said many people with a disability faced barriers that prevented them from "full participation in the democratic process".
