The Welsh Ambulance Trust declared a critical incident due to a surge in calls and ambulances waiting outside hospitals to handover patients.
The Welsh Ambulance Trust declared a critical incident on Monday evening due to overwhelming demand on its services. More than 340 calls were waiting to be answered, and over half of the Trust's ambulances were stranded outside hospitals waiting to hand over patients. This backlog has resulted in some people facing delays of many hours for an ambulance. The Trust emphasized that it is taking additional measures to alleviate the pressure on its services and continue assisting the public.
Stephen Sheldon, Head of Service at the Trust, urged the public to only call 999 in the event of a life-threatening emergency, such as cardiac arrest, chest pain, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, choking, or catastrophic bleeding. For non-life-threatening emergencies, he recommended utilizing alternatives like NHS 111 Wales symptom checkers, GPs, pharmacists, and Minor Injuries Units
