Walkers fuming after trekking up to Darwen Hill to find historic Jubilee Tower locked

Walkers in Darwen have been left raging after trekking up a popular walking route - only to find its destination walking tower had been locked.

Alex - who did not wish to share his surname - took a trip up to the Tower last weekend. Talking to LancsLive, Alex said: "It’s quite ironic that a monument with two public viewing platforms, that was built to also celebrate the freedom to roam the moor to be locked to the people making the trip up. "As a Darwen resident, it’s a shame that the council feels that the Tower should be now locked between certain hours in the first place, but I can understand the reason behind it even if I don’t agree. I personally feel that the local council should be more transparent in their decision-making, and open to discussion with the local residents."

According to Visit North West, the Tower is built at 86 feet tall and boasts two viewing platforms and a stone spiral staircase which leads up to its first-level. The top level however, is reached by a narrower metal spiral staircase.
