Dylan Pietsch finally made his Wallabies debut last Saturday, becoming the 15th Indigenous player in the history of the side after a false start during last year’s World Cup, when he says he was “ghosted” by former coach Eddie Jones’ camp.
“I could have easily just kind of kicked stones and not enjoyed my experience . But I went, ‘Oh, this is just another thing that’s going to come, there’s going to be worse things than this to happen to me’.”“Otherwise, you don’t want things that are out of your control to take over your life,” he said, acknowledging that much of an elite athlete’s career is defined by one person’s opinion of how you play.
The number of Indigenous Wallabies spanning 130 years is, as Pietsch puts it, “pretty poor”. It includes Cec Ramalli, Lloyd McDermott, Mark Ella, Glen Ella, Gary Ella, Lloyd Walker, Jim Williams, Andrew Walker, Wendell Sailor, Timana Tahu, Saia Faingaa, Anthony Faingaa, Matt Hodgson and Kurtley Beale.“ I think we kind of missed the jump probably early on, we had the Ella brothers, obviously they kind of created a big thing for rugby ...
“So, it’s something that can be changed. It’s just a matter of actually putting some money behind and have some good heads around it.”
