On Saturday, the hostile South Asian neighbours face off in a rare encounter on the cricket field with a billion people riveted to the action.

“The concern with sibling rivalry is when it turns into sibling abuse. The core root of sibling abuse is the intent to harm and control the other sibling.”While there is unrelenting political animosity among South Asia’s two largest siblings, India and Pakistan, it has fortunately never pervaded cricket. These rare encounters are spicier for fans than for the players, who hold their cricketing rivals in high regard, unlike their respective governments.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian government have banned bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, alleging cross-border terrorism by the latter as a policy of state. India and Pakistan only play each other as part of an ICC world event. The two warring neighbours will play in India on Saturday after a gap of eight years. Only a couple of the Pakistani playing squad have been to India before, whilst India last toured Pakistan 17 years ago.

The optics of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese circling the ground in a silly chariot with the Indian Prime Minister in March at the Test match were cringe-worthy. The BCCI and Modi’s political party, the BJP, had bussed in tens of thousands of people to cheer India’s leader.Credit:Incidentally at the same Test match, I also witnessed a section of spectators trolling and insulting two Indian Muslim players with communal chants and taunts.
