The number of people crossing the Channel in small boats has surged in recent days – just two weeks after Rishi Sunak credited a lull to his Government’s hardline policies

The data comes two weeks after Mr Sunak claimed his “stop the boats” policies were a success, during a visit to Dover. A £140m plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda remains mired in legal battles, with no one at all removed under that scheme to date, eight months after Home Secretary Suella Braverman said it was her “dream” and “obsession” to get flights up and running.

Ravishaan Rahel Muthiah of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants said: “We know that government policies that seek to demonise migrants don’t work. So-called ‘deterrents’ have never worked and never will. People who are seeking a safer and better life are focused on survival and will not be deterred by the threat of penalties. For those desperate enough to risk the dangerous journeys to come here – government threats are the least of their concerns.
