'Whooping cough can affect people of all ages but for very young infants, it can be particularly serious.'
Cases of the 'particularly serious' infection known as the '100-day' whooping cough are soaring, health bosses warn.
According to data from the UK Health Security Agency , the South West and South East have the highest rates of the infection in the country. Known as the '100-day' cough, whooping cough predominantly affects infants and young children.Officially named pertussis, the condition is characterised through the whooping noise made when coughing. At the beginning of the year, a huge number of cases were reported, with 1,468 in the first two months.
Now, doctors are re-iterating warnings to parents for them to get their youngsters crucial jabs. Although whooping cough is a bacterial disease, a vaccine is available for babies and individuals during pregnancy, reports the Mirror.
