A horsefly uses its 'strong saw-like mouthparts' to issue its painful bite
A horsefly expert has revealed the best ways to avoid the insect in the wild and how to know if you have been bitten.
He warned: "The horsefly bite often tops lists of some of the most painful insect bites in the UK.
