Australians travelling overseas have been issued with a warning after a number of alleged incidents abroad in recent weeks.
Australians are being warned the government cannot get them"out of trouble" overseas as the actions of citizens while abroad come under scrutiny.
Australians were also told to brush up on the laws of the country they are travelling to before their departure, and make sure they obey the local rules when overseas. "Don't expect to be treated differently by local authorities because you're Australian," Smartraveller continued. "We can't get you out of trouble, out of jail, or pay your legal bills or fines. Stay within the law, and you won't need our help."
Smartraveller pointed out Australians also run the risk of having their visa cancelled if they behave badly overseas. In the last month, a number of Australians have found themselves facing jail time after alleged incidents overseas. In an interview with 2GB's Ben Fordham on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Penny Wong was questioned about the alleged incidents and assistance that might be offered.
