The Met Office yellow warning lasts until 1900 and stretches from Selsey to Lydd in the South East.
A warning for high winds is in place across coastal areas of East and West Sussex as well as parts of Kent. A fallen tree has brought down power cables on the A272 between North Chailey and Piltdown in East Sussex.
A Met Office spokesperson said: "Some disruption to weekend activities and events is possible, alongside a risk of power outages and some low level travel disruption.
" Gusts of 45-50mph are likely widely along coasts and more generally across Cornwall, possibly reaching 55mph in a few exposed spots, they added. The weather warning covers the whole of the East and West Sussex coastal areas and touches as far as Lydd in Kent. The Met Office statement said: "Winds will steadily move eastwards across English Channel coastal districts, reaching Sussex by mid-afternoon.
