The species may be under threat from human activities

Environmental organisations have issued a serious warning after a harbour porpoise washed up onto Skegness beach - stating that the animal could be under threat. The marine mammal are common in British waters and according to some the under-threat fish have been popping up more regularly in recent times.

Organisations stated that humans could be putting them under threat. Skegness Aquarium said the species is in danger from human activities such as accidental catching from fisheries, boat strikes, plastic pollution and climate change, reported Lincolnshire Live. A spokesperson said: "These may have been a contributing factor in the death of the individual but it is hard to be sure from the image."Unfortunately these incidents are becoming more common, and we can help by eating sustainably caught seafood, reducing plastic consumption, and trying to reduce our carbon footprints.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue said: "We don't get many harbour porpoises stranding in Lincolnshire, some years we may see a few, other years we see none. They are a common coastal species usually seen on their own or in pairs. "They hunt close to shore so are known to get caught out sometimes, but generally they are well adapted for coastal water. Dangers to harbour porpoises include marine litter, specifically entanglement including bycatch, seal or dolphin predation, and boat traffic, jet skis etc."
