'It’s vital there is no speculation which could undermine a future trial'
A warning has been issued for anyone sharing information online about the Southport stabbing suspect.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service has today issued a warning over reporting, commenting or sharing information online about the case. Taking to X, the CPS stated they had announced further charges against the teenager and warn against anyone who may prejudice these proceedings. The post adds: "Yesterday we announced further charges against Axel Rudakubana. We want to remind people that criminal proceedings against Axel Rudakubana are active and therefore it is extremely important that there is no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
How could sharing information prejudice proceedings? A case becomes 'active' once a suspect has been arrested, charged or an arrest warrant has been issued. As soon as this has happened, a 'strict liability' rule applies to what is published.
