New warning signs have been put up at Scotsman's Flash after the tragic drowning of 15-year-old Alex Crook in 2024, but the coroner has raised concerns that they don't explicitly say 'no unauthorised swimming'. The report also questions the placement of life-saving throw lines.
New warning signs have been installed at Scotsman's Flash, a popular beauty spot in Wigan , following the tragic drowning of 15-year-old Alex Crook in September 2024. However, the coroner who presided over Alex's inquest has expressed concerns that the signs lack the explicit message 'no unauthorised swimming'. A new report, stemming from Alex's death, also questions the placement of life-saving ' throw lines ' at the lake.
The coroner, John Pollard, believes that placing throw lines near obvious entry points would be more effective.Alex, a well-liked student at Standish High School, got into trouble while swimming with friends at Scotsman's Flash on September 7, 2024. Despite his friends' attempts to help, he disappeared beneath the surface and remained underwater for approximately five minutes. His body was later recovered by a member of the public. The coroner recorded a conclusion of accidental death by drowning. In his 'prevention of future deaths' report to Wigan Council, Mr. Pollard highlights the importance of clear warning signs and readily accessible throw lines to prevent similar tragedies.Following Alex's death, his family established 'Awareness for Alex', a group advocating for increased awareness of open water dangers, more prominent warning signs around bodies of water, and mandatory swimming lessons in primary schools. The coroner also revealed that three schools in Wigan are still failing to fulfill their statutory duty of providing swimming lessons. Wigan Council responded to the coroner's report, expressing their condolences to Alex's family and confirming that they have taken several steps at Scotsman's Flash since the incident. They also stated that they have conducted reviews of other water sites within the borough and will give full consideration to the coroner's recommendations
