Amid rising tensions with China, Australia will host the Indian navy’s flagship war games, also welcoming ships from the US and Japan.

The Quad leaders may not have made it to Sydney but warships from the Australian, US, Indian and Japanese navies are putting on a show of unity amidAustralia for the first time is hosting Exercise Malabar, the Indian navy’s flagship war games, with exercises to be conducted over the next 10 days off Sydney and the NSW south coast.

Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, commander of the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet, said at a press conference on Thursday the exercise was “not pointed toward any one country” and would improve the ability of the four forces to work with each other.“The deterrence that our four nations provide as we operate together as a Quad is a foundation for all the other nations operating in this region,” Admiral Thomas said.

The exercises are billed as improving interoperability between the four navies, which are members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, and have been described as the most sophisticated the Indian navy participates in. “Amid the current strategic circumstances, it is more important than ever we partner with our neighbours, and deepen our defence partnerships,” Defence Minister Richard Marles said.
