Women from the WASPI campaign addressed MPs in the House of Commons on Wednesday
Women have spoken about feeling angry and let down following the government's decision not to compensate those affected by the poorly communicated changes to the state pension age.
However, in December 2024, the government said that, while it accepted the Ombudsman’s finding of maladministration and apologised for there being a delay in writing to 1950s-born women, a blanket compensation scheme, which could cost taxpayers up to £10.5 billion, cannot be justified. "And if you’ve already given up work in your late 50s, maybe in your mid-50s, depending on what your circumstances are, four, five, six years later, whenever you heard about the law changing, it’s very, very difficult to get back in.
"And we are now shocked again because the ombudsman suggested that we were being compensated for stress, lack of notice, you know, the anxiety, the shock, all the adjustments we had to make, some that we couldn’t make. During a later session on Wednesday, Karl Banister, the deputy ombudsman of PHSO, gave evidence to the committee, saying: "We are pleased that the government has said yes, there was maladministration. We’re pleased that the government has apologised, those are the positives, that’s the glass half full.

MPs Push for Compensation for WASPI Women Despite Labour's OppositionMembers of Parliament (MPs) are renewing their efforts to secure compensation for WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) women born in the 1950s, despite Labour's declared stance against payouts. The Government rejected calls for a compensation scheme, even after the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman recommended payments ranging from £1,000 to £2,950. Numerous MPs, including from the Liberal Democrats, Green Party, and Plaid Cymru, are backing a motion urging the Government to reverse its decision and provide justice for the 3.6 million affected women.
