Unfortunately, over 222,000 of these women have died since 2015, so we really need a speedy resolution to this injustice 🖊️ Baroness Ros Altmann for ipaperviews

. Two main campaign groups for 1950s-born women born have mounted legal challenges for compensation. Back to 60 – demanding their state pension backdated to age 60 – and “Women Against State Pension Inequality” , which is more moderate, or some might say realistic.

The Waspi Group chose, in my view correctly, to appeal to the Parliamentary Ombudsman, rather than the courts. There were, in fact, three major problems. Firstly, despite the law increasing women’s state pension age from 60 to 65 between 2010 and 2020 being passed in 1995 – 15 years before the start date – the Government did not tell them, denying them the chance to plan for the delay.

Anyone with private pensions could still draw retirement income at 60, but many older women have little or no private pensions to tide themselves over. Those unaware of the first changes suddenly faced a six year delay, not the 18-month second rise which Parliament focussed on. Women who had stopped work to care for loved ones, or were themselves unwell, or could not find employment due to ongoing ageism in the workplace, clearly faced hardship without private pensions or savings.
