The WASPI campaign recently announced that over 250,000 women affected by State Pension age changes have died since their fight for justice began in 2015.
Parliament was due back from summer recess yesterday , but before the break, MP Neal Hanvey questioned Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride MP, if he had “plans to provide additional financial support to women born in the 1950s who have been affected by changes in the State Pension age”.
The DWP Minister continued: “Had the State Pension age not been equalised, women who would be retiring today upon reaching the age of 60, would be expected to spend over 40% of their adult lives in receipt of State Pension. This decision has been upheld by successive governments.”Ms Trott also highlighted how the UK Government is “committed to delivering a comprehensive package of support to help older workers to remain and return to work”.
The SNP’s Patricia Gibson has also tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament for MPs to debate the “devastating impact of continuing unfair pension treatment of 1950s-born WASPI women . The North Ayrshire and Arran MP is also urging the UK Government to “respond promptly” to the findings from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s report into the way the changes to the State Pension age were communicated.
Three in five of the affected women say they had already retired or cut their working hours down by the time they found out they would not get their State Pension at 60. Others claim they have fallen into financial hardship, with recent data showing nearly half of 1950s-born women have struggled to pay essential bills in the last year.
