In AriWasserman's mind, college football had reached the best version of itself at the beginning of the College Football Playoff era. Conference alignment was perfect. Geography mattered. “We get that for one more glorious year before greed wins.”
announced their intention to jump from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten a little more than a year ago — the move that got all of this rolling — there was a thought-provoking discussion floating on the internet and on popular college football podcasts:
If you could pick a point in time in college football and live there forever, considering both conference alignment and postseason rules, when would that be and why? The answers to this question, predictably, vary greatly based on age, fan affiliation and location. Some people hate how the College Football Playoff has overemphasized the importance of the national championship. Some people miss the Big East. Some would want to permanently bask in the glory days of the Southwest Conference. Nobody is wrong. Personal preference, is, well, personal preference. My answer? Drop me at the beginning of the College Football Playoff era and leave me there.
. I appreciate the scarcity of Playoff spots and the drama that scarcity means for the regular season. And, as a college football writer and podcaster, the six-week debate comparing Playoff resumes is peak joy. Everyone has a voice in the debate, and everyone can get in if they are good enough. Though I am not a fan of the 12-team Playoff — we can barely find four worthy teams half of the time — I understand it. Though it may de-emphasize some big-time matchups in the regular season or turn world-rocking upsets into mulligans, it gives more teams a seat at the table that has long been reserved for a select few. Sure, money was behind Playoff expansion, too, because everything that happens in this sport is predicated on finances.
