At least two children a year die after swallowing lithium coin cell batteries in the UK
A little girl was left fighting for her life after swallowing a button battery that burned a hole in her throat for weeks.
But the symptoms didn’t go away and after two months she finally had an X-ray, which revealed a small round shadow lodged in her food pipe. Button batteries are very small and found in all manner of household items, including watches and clocks, bathroom scales, toys, TV remotes and bicycle lights. ‘But the battery was lodged so tightly, so they explained to me and her dad that they’d need to do a follow up procedure to make an incision in her neck to try and take it out that way. They put her in an induced coma ready for surgery first thing the following day.
Sabrina added: ‘The moment that really sticks in my mind is the day after Taylor-Rose was brought around from her induced coma. He added: ‘Along with many girls and boys her age Taylor-Rose is naturally inquisitive and will investigate the world by putting things in her mouth now and then.‘I am keen that her story will help families understand the dangers presented by button batteries so they can keep their children safe from the harm that they can do.’According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, at least two children a year die after swallowing lithium coin cell batteries in the UK.
