Outrage at water bosses' mammoth salaries and £600k bonuses while Lancashire beaches blighted by sewage

People in Lancashire have blasted the high salaries of water company bosses after raw sewage was claimed to be discharged into rivers and found at beaches.

Morecambe was one of 40 towns in England and Wales hit with pollution warnings last month after heavy rain overwhelmed the sewage system following months of little or no rain. Swimmers and visitors described their experiences as 'disturbingly poopy', while conservationists also warned of the ravages of algal blooms in Windermere due to sewage.

“This would not happen in the public sector where they would be held accountable for their actions. These second jobs should be stopped, because currently, they are a reward for failure.” However, Morecambe's seafront's status as a polluted dumping ground has been disputed, with David Morris, Conservative MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, claiming there is no sewage being dumped into Morecambe Bay and accusing the Liberal Democrats of "running a disinformation campaign saying that sewerage has been dumped into waters 29,000 times last year".

“We are committed to developing the most effective solutions to maintain and improve water quality in the lake, including collating more scientific evidence to better understand the particular pressures on Windermere to allow us to target more effectively our interventions.”
