San Diego draws more than 32,000 fans to Saturday's season opener, but fall 2-1 to Kansas City

Victorious in their previous two season openers, the San Diego Wave sought the hat trick Saturday night before an announced crowd of 32,066 at Snapdragon Stadium as the National Women’s Soccer League franchise also began defense of its 2023 regular-season title. The much-improved Kansas City Current spoiled the party, winning 2-1.

When the ball bounced off Wave midfielder Emily van Egmond to Current defender Isabel Rodriguez, the Ohio State alum whirled and netted a left-to-right shot that deflected off Wave defender Abby Dahlkemper. The Current’s Bia Zaneratto created the penalty kick. Her nifty attack into the box led defender Christen Westphal to trip her although the defense behind Westphal was set up well. Lo’eau LaBonta put the penalty past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.
