Lyons, N.Y. (WHAM) -- Wayne County is declaring a state of emergency on eclipse day. Up to 60,000 people are expected to visit the county to view the celestial

Wayne County expects up to 60,000 people to visit for the celestial event on Monday, increasing the population by 50 percent.

"We don't want people to panic; it's not what the purpose is," Verno said. "We are supposed to get between 50 and 60,000 people and the county's population is roughly 90,000 people," he continued. "We feel strongly that it's necessary to declare a state emergency so we can close some roads, change some traffic patterns, and have the legal authority to do it.

According to Verno, routes 104 and 31 are the primary east-west roads, and there are six north-south roads in Wayne County. He says the Wayne County Sheriff's Office has state and federal resources coming to help April 8.
