Wayne McCullough says a little bit of Belfast humour led to him landing a big coaching opportunity in the United States.
Herring beat Carl Frampton in the Belfast man's last-ever fight back in 2021, but since then he has suffered successive defeats to Shakur Stevenson and Jamaine Ortiz respectively.The former US Marine has been inactive following a shoulder injury which he says is now "fully healed" without requiring any surgery.
Revealing how his appointment came about, McCullough said: "I was on a call about a young fighter who was coming over to train with me. Jamel was also on the call as he is involved in the company who works with these fighters. "I was joking, as Jamel is an established fighter who is at the tail end of his career. But he said, 'This is why we're on the phone, to ask you if you would be interested in training me'.
