After leaving Plymouth Argyle, Wayne Rooney explores various career options, including a return to Manchester United as a striking coach, punditry, and a potential second stint as Derby County manager.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney continues his search for a new role after parting ways with Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve. The 39-year-old manager was dismissed by the Devon club following a disappointing start to the season, securing only five victories since his arrival. Plymouth remained in the relegation zone upon his departure and continue to struggle at the bottom of the Championship under new head coach Miron Muslic.
Over a month since leaving Argyle, Rooney finds himself at a crossroads in his post-playing career. His next full-time position remains unconfirmed, but MEN Sport has explored several potential avenues. One intriguing possibility is a return to Manchester United in a striking coach capacity. Former Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce suggested on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast last month that Rooney's expertise could be valuable to the team. 'Is there enough for you to do as a striking coach? Because I’ve had a striking coach and I thought, yes, another voice is very good,' Allardyce remarked. 'But, I wouldn't say they were full-time, I’d say a part-time striking coach is probably enough, because there's so many other things you need to do. Wayne’s addicted to football, he has the addiction. 'I mean, we're all addicted to football, but Wayne particularly has shown his addiction as he’ll travel anywhere.' Shortly after Allardyce's suggestion, Rooney announced his return to coaching this month. He has been named as an ambassador for Football Escapes and will lead his first coaching session for children at Dubai's Jumeirah Beach Hotel between February 17 and 21. Last week, it was announced that Rooney's training session had sold out.Despite these coaching ventures, Rooney's next move is likely to involve punditry. He has gained popularity on major networks for his outspoken opinions, following a similar path taken by fellow former managers Roy Keane and Gary Neville. While Neville shows no signs of slowing down, Keane has expressed a desire to step away from punditry soon. According to The Mirror, Sky Sports, BBC, and TNT Sports are all vying to secure his services. The BBC hopes to attract Rooney to their revamped Match of the Day next season, allowing him to potentially work for other networks due to the show's format. Sky Sports also highly values Rooney and has featured him on their Stick to Football podcast alongside Neville, Keane, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott. Although considered outsiders, TNT Sports could be an option, as Rooney collaborated with his former teammate Rio Ferdinand for the match between Everton and United at Old Trafford last season.Meanwhile, according to Gambling.com, Rooney is among the favorites to return to Derby County for a second stint as manager if Paul Warne is dismissed. He is currently priced at 5/1 to be hired by the Rams, who last tasted victory on Boxing Day. Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard is the current frontrunner to replace Warne at 11/8
