Households face a £86 rise in water bills by 2025, but experts recommend simple ways to mitigate the impact, focusing on appliance efficiency and water-saving practices.
Households are bracing for a predicted £86 increase in water bills by 2025. However, there are various ways to soften the financial impact. Experts suggest simple measures such as lowering the temperature of the water heating system, using a dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand, and ensuring household appliances have high energy efficiency ratings.
According to Les Roberts from comparison site Bionic: 'One mistake people make is using outdated, inefficient washing machines and dishwashers. 'The higher your appliance's energy efficiency rating, the less energy and water it will use to run and the running cost will be much lower. Most modern dishwashers also don't use your home's hot water supply, but rather heat cold water internally, making them more energy efficient than older machines. If you've had your machine for longer than 10 years, it's definitely worth upgrading to a more efficient model.' Mr Roberts also recommended using the eco setting on washing machines, which can reduce water consumption by around 30%, without compromising on cleanliness, as the cycle length compensates. He pointed out: 'This doesn't sound like a lot, but if you are running multiple half-empty loads a day, this will soon add up,' reports Chronicle Live. 'Making sure to only run your dishwasher and washing machine on full loads is the best way to make your appliances more efficient,' Mr Roberts advised. Offering further insight on water conservation, he said: 'If you are washing dishes by hand and leaving the tap running constantly or filling up the sink multiple times, you'll end up using more water than the average dishwashing cycle would.' He also noted that using a dishwasher in an efficient manner saves water, saying: 'Using your dishwasher in an efficient way will use much less water overall than hand washing every item thoroughly'
