The holy Islamic month of Ramadan is expected to start on Sunday, March 10, although the exact date may vary.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and was when the Qur'an was revealed to the prophet Muhammad. It is a time filled with blessings, when worshippers focus their minds and bodies on spirituality and worship rather than on physical needs and indulgences. Fasting is carried out each day during Ramadan, with no food eaten between early morning and sunset. Between pre-dawn meal, called suhoor, and a post-fasting meal, the iftar, no food or drink can be consumed.READ MORE: Scouser knew her next career move after answering stranger's question
Not every one undertakes the fast, though. People suffering from illness are exempt, as are people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or menstruating. If you have Muslim colleagues, friends, family members, or neighbours, it can be nice to wish them a Happy Ramadan. The simplest way to do so is to say "Ramadan Mubarak", which means "Blessed Ramadan, may Ramadan bring us blessings".
Alternatively, you can say "Ramadan Kareem", which translates as "Have a generous Ramadan". An appropriate response to this is "Allahu Akram'", meaning "God is much more generous".Receive newsletters with the latest news, sport and what's on updates from the Liverpool ECHO by signing up here
