Dozens of cyclists, mayors, council members, Cuyahoga County and Cleveland Metroparks representatives participated in a 10-mile community bike ride on Saturday as part of Celebrate Trails Day.
GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio – Seventy-year-old Lakewood resident Lucinda Cave biked 20 miles from her home to Garfield Park Reservation to not only bike with a group of likeminded people, but to celebrate one of Northeast Ohio’s biggest assets, the Cleveland Metroparks, and the bike trails that weave through it.
“You can safely ride on trails, but then if the trail doesn’t lead anywhere or all of a sudden dumps you out in a street, then the safety effect is washed away by that,” Cave said. “Cuyahoga County, Greater Cleveland has many beautiful park areas that can be connected so that cyclists can ride for recreation but also use those trails to get to their business, their work, their enjoyment and we have that possibility here. We all want to make Cleveland better.
Bikers were able to enjoy a beautiful spring day on wheels as they rode on both trails and roads at an easy pace with safety support from Bike Cleveland, Slow Roll Cleveland and police. “I grew up in a small town in Lake County and I was always biking and always riding into other communities. Once I moved into the Shaker area I joined a bike club. It’s an opportunity for me to join a community. I rarely ride alone, so I’m always trying to ride with a club or a group. I get to meet people, I get to hangout with the friends from those clubs.”
