READ MORE: Primary school crossing plans unveiled to counter fears over new road layout outside Preston In July this year, improvements to Castle Street were completed, after "temporary disruption" in this area. Town councillor Mark Sutcliffe said: "While the recent town centre improvements did cause some temporary disruption, they have dramatically improved the look and feel of the town centre and made the pavements safer for pedestrians."
"They shut the road off so you couldn't drive the normal way you went. What they should have done was made all the car parks around the town free, whilst they were doing the work. "According to research by Living Streets, High Streets where the pedestrian experience has been improved see footfall increasing by between 20 and 35 per cent. We believe that making it easier and safer to walk, wheel or cycle around the town centre can make Clitheroe a happier, healthier and more prosperous place."
However, on Castle Street itself, Nick Gell of Cowman's Famous Sausage Shop said the closures were detrimental to his business. Nick said: "We lost a lot of trade when it did close, but I don't think it was all because of that, that would be unfair on the council to say."
